Hackers Attempted to Boil Vital Medical Supplies in Targeted Cold Chain Attack

November 5, 2026 2 min read

French health authorities have revealed that national blood banks were caught up in a wave of coordinated cyberattacks targeting refrigeration systems across Europe. The French Blood Establishment confirmed that a security breach hit a third party service provider, granting hackers access to the control systems of three different cold storage sites used for plasma and blood samples. In a chilling attempt to destroy medical supplies, attackers tried to reprogram the freezers to reach a boiling 110 degrees Celsius instead of their required minus 30 degrees.

Fortunately, the attempt failed thanks to rapid detection by internal monitoring and alarm systems. Staff acted quickly to secure and transfer all sensitive materials before any temperature spikes occurred, meaning no blood products were lost and patient care remained uninterrupted. While the immediate threat was neutralized, the French Health Ministry and national cybersecurity agencies have launched an investigation into how the breach happened and who was behind it.

The equipment supplier, Coolworld, claimed the vulnerability originated from a component provided by another vendor and was therefore beyond their direct control. To prevent further incidents, remote access to the affected refrigerators has been completely disabled while officials continue to scrub the network for remaining weaknesses.

This incident appears to be part of a wider campaign against European cooling infrastructure. Similar attacks recently struck supermarkets in France and Germany, where hackers successfully destroyed massive amounts of frozen food, costing retailers millions of euros. One major Dutch supermarket chain estimated that these disruptions could slash its quarterly sales by as much as 250 million euros, highlighting a growing trend of criminals targeting the essential thermal chains that keep both food and medicine safe.
